History around the Hotel Gamsleiten

The Hotel Gamsleiten was built by Adolf and Liselotte Waser in 1977. At that time, Adolf Waser was the managing director of the Tauernlift GesmbH and ran the 4-star hotel at the foot of the Gamsleiten in the centre of Obertauern with his wife Lilo.

In 1992 Adolf Waser suffered a fatal accident in a fall down a staircase. From then on, Lilo was the sole manager of the hotel.

In summer 2001, my brothers and I took over the hotel. This brought me to the Lungau side of the Tauern and I immediately threw myself into the renovation and modernisation of the hotel.

In 2001, the rooms were equipped with new solid wood furniture and modernised.

In summer 2007, the bathrooms were tackled and extensively renovated.

In 2009, the façade was given a new look by applying a full thermal insulation and replacing the windows.

In 2010, we demolished the old "Schmankerlstube" in the style of an old Viennese coffee house and replaced it with a modern evening restaurant with buffet area for our half-board guests.

In 2011, a new passenger lift was installed and the ventilation system was replaced.

In 2013, the sauna area was given the chop. The area was hollowed out, redesigned and equipped with 2 saunas, infrared cabin, experience showers and a rest area.

In 2014 and 2015, all room doors will be replaced with solid oak doors with sound insulation and most of the carpeting will be replaced with modern wooden floors.

In 2016, the Bernhofer Hotel GmbH is divided between us brothers and 3 independent hotel businesses are created. From now on, the older brother Hans and his family run the parent company Hotel Alpenland and the younger brother Wilfried runs the Aparthotel Bernhof.

In 2018, the 3rd floor is converted into modern hotel suites and double rooms. A new roof is also added on this occasion.

2020: Due to the pandemic, the hotel will be closed for the 2020/21 season. But there is no time to mope, we are already planning the next renovation.

2022 The hotel will be expanded with a spacious relaxation area, fitness room, panorama pool on the first floor with a magnificent view of the "Gamsleiten" mountain and a block sauna. A new reception area with hotel bar is also on the programme, as is a spacious ski and boot room. Furthermore, investments are being made in the infrastructure and new staff accommodation.

So we are looking to the future with a lot of optimism and we would like to thank all our partners who have accompanied us on our way so far. A special thanks goes to our many regular guests and friends who have remained loyal to us over the last 20 years and who make this place so special through their presence!
